An adventure like few others…

Among the many landscapes found in our wide range of destinations, there are a few that we can only access during a short period of the year. This is the case represented by the transition between the Puna and the Yungas or Nuboselva, mainly when you want to travel through one of its rivers, particularly the Iruya, which on its way to the Bermejo, descends abruptly from 2700 meters above sea level to 600 meters above sea level. masl, just where the mountain ranges give way to the endless plain that characterizes the Gran Chaco.

On our way, we will pass through small hamlets, some of them with schools that usually house the children who come down from the hills during the winter to attend classes. It is worth mentioning that these places, starting in November, are already isolated with the beginning of the rains and will remain so until the month of April, given that the small winter river becomes one of the most dangerous in the country, dragging everything away. whatever is in its path, including large rocks and trees intermingled in what they call “volcanoes”, alluviums of gigantic rocks that come to “float on a river of mud.” In this way, the Iruya River becomes the largest contributor of sediment to the Río de la Plata, per year.

For all this, the expedition that we propose will confront us with various challenges typical of transiting the bed of a mountain river, innumerable fordings, rocks, areas of unstable terrain, etc. for almost 120 km in length, among which we can also share some nights of camping and bonfire.

We will begin our adventure in La Quiaca, traveling several kilometers between the Puna and some Abras along mountain and bridle paths with intermediate “abras” that will allow us to access the river practically at one of its most extreme sources, the Nazareno River. We will detour to reach Iruya and finally we will take the river again to go in search of the Yungas, passing through some mountain schools and allowing ourselves to enjoy a night of camping and bonfire in an incredible place. A trip that will allow us to have many unique and unrepeatable experiences, until we finally reach Oran.
